They Come to Play

Those are the four main words that stand out when discussing the absolutely original dynasty of the San Antonio Spurs.  A lot of analysts and fans always compare dominant teams of now to past dynasties.  Can one compare the San Antonio Spurs to any other of the past?  Don’t think so!

The San Antonio Spurs play as a team and do not really have any main all-star.  That is what makes the Spurs a unique team.  The Bulls had Jordan, the Lakers had Magic and the Celtics had Bird.  The Spurs have everyone else.

After watching game seven between the Spurs and the Hornets really proves this.  Tim Duncan has not played in the playoffs like he usually does throughout the season but who stepped up?  Pretty much everyone else like Ginobili, Parker, Bowen, Finley, Udoka, Horry and the list goes on, played unbelievably well.

They played as dynasties do and even better.  How many teams actually come back 0-2 in a Western Conference semi-finals game against a great team like the New Orleans Hornets?  Well, dynasties do.

The next challenge for the Spurs will be the Los Angeles Lakers.  This will be a tough battle but in the end the Spurs will prevail because of their bench.  If Michael Finley and Robert Horry come off the bench and hit a few threes, they will win the game.  If Ime Udoka and Robert Horry come off the bench and provide unstoppable defensive plays, they will win the game.  If Robert Horry comes off the bench and scores a field goal with dying seconds left in the game, obviously, they will win the game.  Notice how many times Robert Horry was mentioned in the team’s game plan.

If one has to make a comparison though, one could make a good comparison to the Utah Jazz of the mid-90s but better.  Think about it.  Stockton/Hornacek is very similar to the Parker/Ginobili connection, Duncan similar to Karl Malone, Bruce Bowen and Umberto similar to the likes of Byron Russell and Greg Ostertag.  Obviously if Jordan and the Bulls weren’t as good, Jazz and Jerry Sloan would have finally won a NBA title.

One can only hope, for me anyway, that the San Antonio Spurs will win the Western Conference final and face the Boston Celtics.
