Ever since Easter Sunday, whenever the Celtics and Red Sox have played on the same day, the fate of one team follows the other. Really, if I were a betting man, and I could find a person to take bets for games already in progress, I would have put money on the fact that the Sox were going to end up losing as well this Sunday afternoon against the Orioles, of all teams.
See, it all started when Dwayne Wade had the game of his career against the Celtics in an elimination game 4 on the Heat's home court. 46 points, and it was an agressive 46. And yet, despite that super-heroic effort from The Flash, let's not forget that the Celtics came back from an 18 point deficit. They led 77-71 at the end of the third quarter. All things considered, they should have won that game. Ray Allen lapsed in his free-throw shooting. Luckily, Wade had the best post-season game of his career, and by missing those free throws, Allen had his worst. Hell, even Garnett tossed up bricks. And yet, despite all that, the C's were still in the game until the last 22 seconds or so. However, like Doc said in his post-game press conference, the plays were there. The execution is what failed, and that is the human element of the game. I don't think Ray is going to miss any free throws back in the sanctuary of the Garden. For all of Wade's accomplishments in game 4, he still turned the ball over at critical moments in the final two minutes fo the game. Celtics should have won that game, which brings me to the Sox...
As I was saying, ever since Easter Sunday, the Sox go as the Celtics did whenever they play the later game. Poor Tim Wakefield. Leaving a game with two outs in the sixth, with a 4-1 lead and runners on second and third? Dear old Tim Wakefield, who instead of picking up yet another win to inch closer to Clemens and Cy Young, instead gets only an early exit after 109 pitches, and a no decision to take to his bull-pen assignment. It really is a shame, but at least if he pitches in relief instead of Okimima, or Ramirez, or even Bard... then he might actually pick up a stop, or a save, or maybe an outright win. Baseball Gods know he deserves it. Dice-man, you had better earn that spot. Show the team some Japanese sense of honor and prove your worth.
I won't say much else about how that game ended. I actually fell asleep and watched the tenth inning dramatics on Baseball Tonight. All I know is that the Yankees lost a game today, and we squandered an opportunity against a ridiculously inferior team. Now we have to go play the Jays, who should also be inferior and yet somehow have a better record than the Sox right now. Vernon Wells vs. Beckett is not the match-up I'd want to see leading off a series in Toronto. Wells is just dangerous right now. Oh, and I don't know if anyone saw Molina's performance against the Rays, but its obvious that we should not try and steal bases against the Jays...as their catcher can actually make an accurate throw to second base.
Celtics don't play again until Tuesday. Sadly, it will be at the same time as the Sox, so I won't find anyone to take that bet either. Ah well.
