Colon to start soon?

So watching NESN’s SportsDesk this evening, I heard the breakdown of Bartolo Colon’s impressive outing tonight at Pawtucket. Throwing a one-hitter in a 2-0 victory over the Buffalo Bisons, it looks as if Colon may be up on the Red Sox’s starting rotation as early as Monday against the Brewers. Tossing 64 pitches (45 for strikes), the former American League Cy Young award winner went six innings, with the only blemish being the Bison’s Mike Aubrey poking a single to right field in the fourth inning.

Colon has battled injuries since winning the 2005 Cy Young, and signed with the Sox as a minor league free agent in the off-season, hoping to bolster an already strong staff. However, with injuries to Curt Schilling and Clay Buchholz, Colon may make his first big league appearance in over a year on either Monday or Tuesday. The Red Sox have yet to announce a starter for either game, and the hunch is that Colon may get a start.

The righty was on top of his game this evening, as he faced the minimum amount of batters for six innings of work, boosting his record to 2-0 with the Paw Sox.

Colon started his career with the Cleveland Indians, playing for the same Bisons he one-hit tonight for parts of three seasons in the late 90’s. Despite throwing a one hitter, this wasn’t even Colon’s best performance at Dunn Tire Park, as he tossed a no-hit gem pitching for Buffalo in 1997.

Colon was clocked at a high of 95 MPH on the radar gun tonight, and hopefully if he is called up for a start next week, he’ll bring back flashes of his stuff that established himself as a top caliber pitcher of the last decade.

Go CELTICS!
