Sox Starting out Strong in Season Opener

Don't get me wrong. It's only been one game.  But boy what a great season opener.

I was listening to WEEI 850am this afternoon, and Glenn Ordway from the Big Show was talking about how fans were getting too excited about just one game.  I agree that we shouldn't get pumped up after just one game, but I believe the excitment is because it was opening day and it was a great ball game.

Josh Beckett struck out Iwamura to start the game and just got better from there.  He went seven strong innings, giving up just 2 hits and a run, while walking 3 and striking out 10.  This might only be the first game, but for a cold day with 45 degree weather, it's not something to just look past.

As if going 1-2-3 in the first wasn't exciting enough to start the game, Dustin Pedroia really got the crowd roaring with a solo shot into the monster seats.  It was an excellent start to an excellent game.

Things were certainly going the Sox's way until the 8th where Okajima put a couple of guys on and Masterson had a little trouble closing the door.  But fortunately, the Red Sox had someone coming out of their own door out in right field. That someone was Jonathan Papelbon. He made sure the game ended just as it started: 1-2-3.

And now tonight, the Sox have their first night game.  It's gonna be a cold one, folks.  Dress warm. And tell that to Roco Baldelli too.  He's starting tonight.
