So I get home last night and turn on the TV only to find that the Sox are losing 7-4. “Okay,” I think to myself, “it looks like I picked a good night to go out.” Then I see that Daniel Bard has just entered the game. Now I’m very happy that I just turned on the TV.
And if that wasn’t enough, Heidi Watney was back.
But in all seriousness, it’s a pretty ugly box score if you look at the whole thing. To see the Red Sox blow a lead and then to see the Angels continued to put on runs after they took the lead isn’t a pretty sight. Then scrolling down the page I noticed Ellsbury got caught stealing…that’s not any more pleasant. So what did happen last night that us Sox fans can be happy about?
How about Jason Bay hitting his tenth homer of the season in the first? If he keeps this up he may be eligible to play in the HR Derby this year. Who would have predicted that?
How about Nick Green continuing to be a great utility man by hitting an RBI double in the second? Sure, we all want Lowrie to get better as soon as possible. But with all these injuries it’s great to see that some of our backups are pulling through for us.
How about Daniel Bard not only making his Major League debut last night, but also striking out his first batter (Mike Napoli) with a 98 mph fastball and proceeding to pitch the next 1.2 innings without giving up a run?
And how about the fact that David Ortiz was simply in the lineup? We’re already injury ridden enough. The fact that Papi was in the line up last night swinging the bat is a great sign. Hopefully we won’t find out later today or tomorrow that he’s gonna need some off days for the wrist, but I’m staying positive on this one.
I like staying positive. This doesn’t always happen with the Sox because it’s so easy to get caught up in the emotional excitement of the game. But today I’m gonna be positive. And here’s another positive note that I’ll end with: Pedroia’s back in the lineup today.
Keep the Faith.
