Bartolo Colon

13 September 2008

If the conditions are right for a good knuckler, start him, if not, use a spot starter like Bartolo Colon.

Game of the Saturday doubleheader would be the opposite. Red Sox starter Paul Byrd, who has pitched well since coming over from Cleveland, was roughed up by the Jays offense, lead by Jays rookie phenom Travis Synder, who had 5 RBIs. The Red Sox offense was stopped by AJ Burnett, who has very quietly won 18 games and leads the AL in strikeouts. He has showed, especially in the second half of the season, what he can do when healthy. The final score was 8-1, as Paul Byrd (whose father's name is actaully Larry Byrd) dropped to 11-12.

Lugo, who has been out since the All-Star break, are expected to be back within a couple of weeks. Bartolo Colon is expected back soon as well to help in either the rotation or the bullpen.

This is nothing but good news for the Red Sox. The Rays have been playing a little sluggish lately, possibly because of their own injury issues. They have more depth now with the rosters expanded and if they have their roster back at full strength for the stretch run, they should be able to give the Rays a run for their money. Remember, they are only 3 games back. Even if they don’t win the division, they should make the playoffs anyway and if they go into the playoffs with their roster at full strength, they are as good as any team in the playoffs, including the Rays, Cubs, and Angels and have a very good chance to repeat.

e the Red Sox' best pitcher, that the starting staff would receive critical contributions from Bartolo Colon and Paul Byrd (potentially two of the ugliest pitchers ever to don a Sox uniform, as an aside), that Jed Lowrie would have more RBI than Julio Lugo, that Manny would take his Manny show to the left coast, that Jason Varitek would be struggling to hit .220, that Kevin Youkilis would be the team's most feared power hitter, and that David Ortiz would miss the bulk of the first half with an injury - I'd probably have predicted that the Sox would finish fourth in the American League East.

Post game notes:

-Bartolo Colon:  Colon left after only throwing 17 pitches last night, according to the beautiful Heidi Watney.  He was said to have left with the stomach flu.  Looks like we won’t be seeing him anytime soon, considering his rehab is going so slowly.

A guy like Bartolo Colon would be a better comparison, and he's never been the same since he logged eight straight 200+ innings season, capped by his 2005 Cy Young season. Following a similar trajectory, the Yanks should expect one or two seasons from CC at most, after which age and injury would likely bring him down.

jor league debut in his hometown city; perhaps the cheers of all of his family & friends helped Bartolo Colon pitch seven innings of one run baseball. Dustin Pedroia ended the Sox offense slump with a 2-out ground rule double in the 8th inning followed by single from both Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell.

So watching NESN’s SportsDesk this evening, I heard the breakdown of Bartolo Colon’s impressive outing tonight at Pawtucket. Throwing a one-hitter in a 2-0 victory over the Buffalo Bisons, it looks as if Colon may be up on the Red Sox’s starting rotation as early as Monday against the Brewers. Tossing 64 pitches (45 for strikes), the former American League Cy Young award winner went six innings, with the only blemish being the Bison’s Mike Aubrey poking a single to right field in the fourth inning.

rs O'Kay and O'FLaherty could get through their commentary on how the Red Sox had picked up Bartolo Colon pretty easily and that he might prove to be a potent weapon for the Sox this season, Colon had loaded the bases. He failed to make it through the opening inning, following the bases-loaded situation by giving up a two RBI double to Hideki Matsui (who seems to have tamed his right shoulder 'twitch' at the plate this year; not completely, but a little) and a subsequent two-run single to Robinson Cano. It was 4-0, Yankees, when Francona pulled Colon out of there with two out in the first. He'd thrown 42 pitches in the first inning, compared to Andy Pettite's 14.
