Brad Penny

24 June 2009

Brad Penny took the No Decision on Tuesday night after going 5.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts.  Had he been able to retire Willie Harris in the 6th, he would have been eligible for the win.

he end of the game, perhaps you forgot all about the starting pitching.  It took place between Brad Penny and CC Sabathia.  Neither pitcher would get the win, which almost seems a little unfair.  Penny absolutely dominated the Yankee lineup (6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K) while hitting 98 pmh on the radar gun. Meanwhile, perhaps Sabathia would have gotten at least a no decision had he been pulled before the 8th (7+ IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K).  In the 8th inning alone, Sabathia allowed 2 hits and a walk – may not seem like much, but had he been pulled, his line score would have looked something like this: (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K) Now can you blame for Girardi for leaving in Sabathia? I don’t think so.  Maybe he should have taken him out before he faced Drew, but it made sense considering it was a lefty-lefty match up.  Without being biased, I feel like it’s unfair that the line score reflects how Sabathia did last night, just as it is unfair that

se of you like myself who aren’t going the game tonight, we’ll be missing what could be Brad Penny’s final appearance in a Sox uniform.  Last night the beautiful Heidi Watney reported that John Smoltz could be ready as early as next week.  Regardless, I don’t think this will be Penny’s last start considering he still may get another start before Smoltz takes the mound for Boston.  I also don’t think that the Sox should get rid of Penny right away (if that is what management is considering).  We still have yet to see how Smoltz will do, and I’m not ready to just get rid of Penny right away regardless of his not-so-good last start (5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5K).  I’m actually surprised with how well he had done up to last Friday’s game, so I’d like him to stick around for a while.

This has been a big topic on WEEI lately.  You can’t help but wonder whether or not our starting rotation is going to change with all the extra pitching we have.  Right now we have a decent rotation of Becket, Lester, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, and Penny.  Meanwhile, redsox.com reports that Smoltz says he’ll be ready to pitch for Boston in just three more starts.  Then you have Clay Buchholz in Pawtuckett with a 3-0 record who nearly threw a perfect game on Monday.

st were routine fly outs.  And yet he tied a record.  Take what you can get, Jacoby!

Brad Penny got his fourth win of the season (6.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, BB, 2 K).  This wasn’t a bad start at all by Penny, but the seventh inning was when he started to get a little tired.  He gave up 4 hits alone that inning, which also allowed the two runs (the second run scored on a double play).  You take those 4 hits away and you’re looking at something much different.  I guess it doesn’t make any difference, but it makes his start look a lot better – 9 hits seems like a lot.  Regardless, he gave them up and still only gave up 2 runs.  Great job, Penny.

ep everyone on an even level.  It should go along way to helping this starting rotation.  Brad Penny should be fine but after that all they have are questions.  Derek Lowe needs to have a good year and Jason Schmidt must get healthy and stay healthy this year.  The line-up should be fine this year.  They are getting older but still have some very productive bats, Nomar, Jeff Kent, Andruw Jones and Juan Pierre.  Russell Martin is a stud at catcher and should really take off this season.  The bullpen has some great arms and one of the better closer in the game, Saito.  My only worry here is the way Joe Torre manages bullpens, he may overuse a lot of these young guys.
