Even a poor performance out of the bullpen by Chris Smith, 4 earned in 2 innings, couldn't stop the Sox who had 6 total homeruns on the night, capped off by a solo shot by Jacoby Ellsbury in the 5th. Matsuzaka finished the night having given up only 3 hits and 1 earned in 5 strong innings, pushing his record to 17-2 and lowering his ERA to 2.93. He is making a strong case and while it will probably be the Indians' Cliff Lee who wins it, Matsuzaka is probably the strongest runner up, despite missing 3 or so weeks with injury and being among with the league leaders in walks.

But that doesn’t mean we’re not a great team. We have Justin Masterson and Chris Smith as new additions to the bullpen. We have Jeff Bailey as a recent call up, who has helped out Sean Casey and Alex Cora with the utility work. As for our regulars, the Captain seems to be hitting to usual ways, and Ellsbury is over 40 steals.

21st century MLB is all about the setup man...ya know, the pitcher who gets you through the 7th and 8th innings to your star closer in the 9th. With Julian Tavares gone, Mike Timlin on the DL, & Okijima still burnt out from the 2007 season, the Sox enter the 2nd part of the 2008 season with a huge hole in their bullpen.
