Daniel Bard

15 October 2009

It was a rough series. I was in San Francisco, missed most of it. Jonathan Papelbon is a turkey, Daniel Bard is the second coming of Rod Beck (‘90s Rod Beck, minus the mullet and a metric ton, give or take). Lets can Pap, keep Bard and save everyone from another year of Pap’s guido shenanigans…. The Celtics won a pre-season game against Toronto the other night and Tommy Heinsohn almost invited an unknown rookie named Lester Hudson to the altar. Should be another interesting season for the C’s, provided Tommy is allowed to pursue his increasingly befuddling tangents, wherever they may take him… I’m mildly afraid for the Patriots this week. The Titans are not a 0-5 team, regardless of what their record might indicate. This is the exact same team (minus Albert “Stomp-On-Your-Face” Haynesworth) that went 10-0 to begin the season last year. And they have Jeff Fisher patrolling the sidelines, who, aside from looking like a 70’s highway cop, also happens to be a damn fine coach.

ing, the Sox bullpen continued to excel by pitching three shutout innings (H, 2 BB, K).   Daniel Bard took the mound in the 9th for a 1-2-3 inning, but what was perhaps more impressive was how he was able to hit 100 mph on the gun - twice.   I still won’t be surprised if he gets sent down to Pawtuckett for a month just to work on control, but he’ll definitely be up for the last month or two.

I’ll end with talking about Daniel Bard.  He didn’t seem to have his stuff last night (0.2 IP,3 H, R).  I’m wondering if maybe he should go back down to AAA for a while and come back up in July or August.  Our bullpen right now is rock solid and we can afford to send him down, especially since Masterson just rejoined the pen.  I say send Bard back down and bring him back up when he’s ready – but by all means don’t trade him!  I keep hearing these trade rumors on RedSoxProspectus and WEEI and I don’t like them one bit.  Keep Bard in AAA, but out of the trade talks.

think to myself, “it looks like I picked a good night to go out.”  Then I see that Daniel Bard has just entered the game.  Now I’m very happy that I just turned on the TV.

Okay well he’s not techically gone, but I have to say I am very pleased with that Daniel Bard has taken Javier Lopez’s spot on the roster.  I’ve mentioned time and time again that I’m sure Lopez is the nicest guy in the world, but he isn’t reliable to have on the mound.  Bard, on the other hand, is going to be very exciting to watch when he makes his Major League debut – as long as his debut isn’t at 1:00am Eastern Time.

ree or four other holes on the roster, and with young arms like Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson and Daniel Bard waiting in the wings, why add another expensive arm to the rotation.

Especially when its an arm as fragile as Burnett's.
