Doc Rivers

3 November 2009

That Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers actively shopped him this past off-season should speak volumes about management’s doubts and concerns. While supremely talented (I would rank him among the

"We'll come back to Chicago, the pizza's good." - Doc Rivers

Yesterday's game was absolutely insane, it wasn't the blow out or back breaker Celtics nation had been hoping and praying for!  With KG and Powe out its been a lot of overtime play for 3 three Big guys and the Celtics still had quite a few chances to pull off the win in this game.  To agree with my colleague; Mr. Denizen of Titletown (hell yeah! Title-town) Big Baby left a lot to be desired in Game 4.  Nearly all of us here in Bean-town had a heart attack watching this game.

(Note: I've published this post on another blog of mine, here.)

Did you see these two teams yesterday? I don't think I've ever been more impressed by a pair of NBA teams on the same day. The Celtics absolutely dismantled a respectable Dallas Mavericks' team, and the Lakers shamed the once-mighty San Antonio Spurs. Everything was clicking for both the Celtics and Lakers, and yet it's not as if this was a one-time deal.

e to solidify the bench and bring a reliable 8-10 points off the pine every night.  Right now, Doc Rivers has no idea who’s going to be his guy off the bench, and as a result he’s had to play Garnett, Allen and Pierce longer to give the Celtics at least one reliable and trustworthy option on the floor at all times.

an issue is Cassell.

I know it's early to be talking about roster decisions, but Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers are going to have their hands full. The team currently has 16 players on its roster, and only 15 will make the cut before opening day. Even then, only 12 guys can dress for any given game. That means four dudes you currently see will no longer be contributing members of the Boston Celtics.

un.  With something as alluring as a first elusive championship for Pierce, Allen, Garnett and Doc Rivers to rally around, the egos were effortlessly shelved and the chant of “ubuntu” resonated deeply within every Celtic’s soul.

I referred to as “the greatest living professional basketball coach,” had no answer for Doc Rivers, a Finals rookie.  Hell, even Mike Brown and Mike Woodson were able to take the Celtics to seven!  Jackson’s experience was supposed to be the ultimate edge in this series (even I was incredibly afraid of the Zen Master’s mystique), but instead Phil’s flaws were exposed.  In fairness, I am willing to recognize just how hard it is to win a championship without Michael Jordan or Shaquille O’Neal in their athletic primes.  What’s he supposed to do, coach his players and teach them to adjust to the other team?  That sounds hard (sarcastic enough for you?).

oston, much less two in a row against the Celtics.  That is, the Lakers shouldn't win again if Doc Rivers can pull his head out of his own ass long enough to properly coach a game and KG can stop doing his best Lamar Odom impression and step up like we all know he can and should.  The Celtics are clearly the better team, they just couldn't quite get it done yesterday.

er gives out and his shooting arm falls off).  I want more Eddie in the next few games, and if Doc Rivers can resist the urge to shoot himself and his ballclub in the foot, he'll make it happen.

s off of Detroit in game three and cruising to a fourteen point lead (it would have been thirty had Doc Rivers kept the Celtics on pace or if the referees had called anything against Detroit in the final period).  After being beaten badly at home and booed by their own fans, it was not surprising that the Pistons responded in game four and resoundingly beat the Celtics last night, 94-75.

23 in the Playoffs.  I'm sure that Doc Rivers and Tom Thibodeau are already scheming and trying to game plan a method to at least slow LeBron, but that is a tall order.

While nobody's asked for my opinion or advice, I'm going to give it anyways: Watch the tape of the 2007 Finals and see the ways that San Antonio contained James.  I've got more coming in the next few days on Cleveland, but if you're hungry already for some nuggets of wisdom on beating the Cavs, check my blog archive, there's plenty in there about the Cavs since I'm so psychic and picked this series a month ago.  Until then, I'm damn tired and ready to get my cinco de mayo on.  I'm thinking of doing a longer piece at work tomorrow, I'll have time and some sweet wireless access down at the boathouse.

The race for coach of the year, on the other hand, is far more wide open.  You could argue for Doc Rivers, though I think he'll suffer in the voting due to the talent available to him and the Celtics position in the weakest division of the weakest conference.  Though it isn't always easy to manage the egos and personalities of so many superstar players, and I do think that

ards and love for the game of basketball).

The reason I'm leaning this way is because I hope that Doc Rivers will continue to limit the minutes of KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.  It's the smart play, mostly because the Celtics have nothing to gain by beating the Knicks and everything to lose by playing hard and running the risk of an injury.  So for once, I hope that the Celtics mail this one in like only the Knicks know how to.  Besides, the game isn't on TV in Portland, I can always forget that it happened if it turns out to be a total travesty.

It's been reported that Paul Pierce has been icing his knees lately and wouldn't mind a rest.  While this may seem troubling to Celtics fans, it's actually just a nice means for me to explain for the 365,872 time why it is soooooo nice to play in the Eastern Conference of the NBA.

Losing back-to-back games in the NBA is not a big deal, it happens to the best of teams.  You play 82 games and it's bound to happen here and there.  Last year it happened here, there, then, now, yesterday, and tomorrow for the Boston Celtics.  But that was last year.
