After a long weekend in Boston Sports Hell, (even the Celtics winning game 1 of their series with the Heat was a kind of loss with the Garnett suspension), Tuesday was a day of Miracles. Who had ever heard of Darnell McDonald? A man who waited 13 years to get his chance to make a difference on a big league team, and on his very first at bat, he hits a two-run home run to breathe life back into this Sox season. Then, the 31 year old rookie hit’s a Monster-scraping walk-off.

I stayed up well past 12p.m. that Sunday night, wanting to catch the ESPN 2 replay of the game since it was blacked out in favor of NESN's broadcast the first time around. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer to watch the game on NESN any time, but for this game I wanted to view it through the national media's eyes as well. It should go without saying that it was immediately like watching two different games. Different camera angles, different inflections of tone between John Miller and Don Orsillo's calls. Different subjects of insight betweeen Joe Morgan, and Jerry Remy. I'm in too good a mood to start pointing out Morgan's shortcomings...

The free agency market was once again dominated by the evil empire this off-season. As Yankee fans rejoiced at the signings of some of the most talented free agents, Red Sox fans held strong: “we can find hitting from within” and, “we have the best five-man rotation in all of baseball” were the phrases we heard from fellow members of the Nation. We chuckled quietly (and not so quietly) as the steroid issue reared its ugly head again this winter, chuckling only because THEY had to deal with it, and not us. We have hope for the Red Sox Captain, and may miss Manny’s bat, but will not miss his antics.

For the last few day the Red Sox looked like a mirror image of the Dodgers. Dying and quickly being pushed out of post season play. A finally, a kid from Woodland, Ca battles his way to a two out RBI single and the Red Sox wake up. Ortiz temporarly breaks out of his slump at the right moment and breathes life back into Red Sox nation. JD Drew has found a home in Boston and calmly belted one over the right field fence to get the Sox back to within one run. Drew looked very comfortable at the plate while working Howell to a 3-1 count. You knew he was going to hit the ball hard somewhere. And he did and Boston will go back to Tampa.

If Game 3 was a disaster, I don’t even know what to call Game 4. Unfortunately, I was there to witness the whole thing. What we had to hoped to be a great evening turned out to be one of the worst Sox games I ever sat through.

I went to Fenway for the first time in a dog's age the other night and watched the Sox lose to Cleveland on a series of Jed Lowrie missed-opportunities. While the outcome was unfavorable, Fenway has not lost any of its charms or ambiance. Allow me to paint a quick sketch, if you will..

Hey there!!! I'm pretty new to the world of blogging but I'm gonna give it a shot. First let me tell you a few basic things about me. My name is Matt, I'm 24 years old and I'm from Boston. That's enough for starters! I've lived in this area my whole life, I'm a huge sports nut and a die-hard Red Sox fan!

Remember last postseason when Josh Beckett was making three of the best teams in Major League Baseball look like the Bad News Bears? It was right about then everyone anointed him the anchor of the Boston pitching staff and forecasted a shelf or two full of Cy Young trophies.

As the Yankees head to town for a three game series that may indeed (if the Tampa Bay Rays cooperate) decide who is in first place (or at least tied for it) by the end of the weekend, there are some predictions that the rhetoric and rivalry might be notched up a bit between these two teams. Kevin Cullen of the Boston Globe writes today the chant "Yankees Suck," often heard in New England not only at Sox games, but at Celtics games, Patriots games and once during a wake in Southie, needs to be put to rest. George Vescey of the New York Times writes that Jonathan Papelbon may have upped the ante during All-Star festivities in New York. And it's only Thursday.

A Fenway experience wouldn't be a Fenway experience if it weren't for certain things: There's the smell of the sausage vendors outside, the cloud of traffic from the Kenmore T stop to the park, all those friendly and amiable scalpers, and, of course, the abundance of easy-to-find, affordable parking. OK, so I made that last part up.

OK, show of hands - who hasn't enjoyed the Kevin-Youkilis-in-goggles era? Manning first behind those fancy specs while sporting a monster shiner, he looks like he's getting ready to play Laser Tag. Since it gives him something of a tough appearance, we don't have to tell anyone it's all because he couldn't handle a warm-up throw. Maybe he can make the goggles a signature thing, like Rip Hamilton of the Pistons and his goofy plastic mask. Hey, if Youk can make the Chia pet goatee work, he can certainly pull off a pair of glasses. It made me start thinking of former players who wore the glasses. Chris Sabo was the first that came to mind. But how about Luis Rivera, former light-hitting shortstop in Beantown, he of the tiny, whispy mustache and glasses complete with that thing that connects around your neck to keep them on. Classic.
