Joe Torre

uns out everything" in L.A., implying that this was not always the case at Fenway.  Maybe Joe Torre has shown him the light, but this is inexcusable.  "That's just people looking for stuff," was Manny's excuse as to why it was such an issue in Boston.

Ever. So, there's that.

2) I call it The Great Joe Torre debate. Is he overrated or not? Once again, allow me to enter some information into evidence. On the one hand, you have the Dodgers. If Torre is so magical, why hasn't he turned them into instant contenders. They weren't far away to begin with, and they've added some serious talent lately (Manny, Casey Blake, etc). And yet they recently suffered an eight-game losing streak. On the other hand, you have the Yankees. They haven't missed the playoffs in a gazillion seasons, but the year after Torre leaves they look to be facing a third-place finish in their own division. So is he overrated or not? Though now that he’s gone and Joe Torre’s problem, I’m not as surprised as I thought I’d be or as disappointed, either. Ok, let’s face it. . first ballot Hall of Famer, who worked hard at his primary objective – hitting baseballs. Can’t fault his work ethic there. It was the other stuff that was a little troublesome. Doggin’ it to first base. Getting’ a big kick out of failing to toss a ball in from left field? We all chimed the mantra – Manny being Manny, but you know what? I’m not at all sure if I were his boss instead of a relatively (and I stress, relatively) devoted fan, I wouldn’t have just fired him. Sorry, boyo, you may think it’s funny that a guy advanced a base ‘cause you were too full of yourself to hustle, but I don’t find it amusing. Nor do I think bad-mouthing management was all that amusing either. . . Later. .

While injuries to starters typically can devastate a team, the injuries to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfield this season have, in fact, been helpful for the team’s future. Losing Andruw Jones and then Juan Pierre has meant more playing time for their young hotshots Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp, something Torre was either unwilling or unable to do, perhaps because he was stuck by the same “play the most who you pay the most” philosophy that has plagued the Mariners.

As we move into the 2008 season, members of the Red Sox Nation will once again sit poised on the edge of their seats as they ponder yet another chapter in what has to be the most storied rivalry in all of major league sports - Sox-Yankees.
