Johnny Cueto
23 June 2008
You’ve certainly heard of Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez, the two fireballing phenoms around which the Reds are building their future. Volquez has been electric, with a 10-2 record to go with a microscopic 1.71 ERA and 1.17 WHIP and 110 Ks against 45 walks. Cueto has similar strikeout numbers (81 against 34 walks) but has been more hittable, with a 5-7 record against a 5.01 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, although those numbers have been improving since the start of the season.

The Reds went all homer-happy over the Cubs last night, and Edinson Volquez twirled a gem on the mound, leading the Reds commentators and Steve Phillips on ESPN to go all gushy on them, proclaiming the future is now and they're gonna take the NL Central. Is this the case?

he rotation this year, but after a rocky debut last year, he might begin this season in the minors. Johnny Cueto is another rookie who has ace potential, but with no big league experience, it will be tough to rely on him.
