Kansas City Royals

-The Kansas City Royals have lost nine straight games.  And I thought that Cleveland would finish their season in last.  Right now both teams are tied, but the real story is who’s on top.  The White Sox and Tigers are both tied for first, while Minnesota is only two and a half games behind.

The Sox are going to have a difficult time making the playoffs this year. I’m no sucker for the Jays quick start (they’ll start to slip once they deal Roy Hallady and realize Marco Scutaro is starting at shortstop) but I think the rest of the American League is better than most pundits allow.

Well, get ready for another season of Detroit Tigers baseball. We have been spoiled the last couple of years. The team actually has expectations and unfortunately so do the fans. Can Mo Town survive another sports team to fail miserably like the hapless Lions? Are we just a hockey town? I don't have the answer to that, but I do get excited for Tiger baseball. As a proclaimed member of the Red Sox Nation, I still love the Tigers. I watch most games and even try to get to the ballpark. I lived in misery because all my neighbors are "Tigers for Life". So my sports life is much better when the Tigers are winning.

With the MLB playoffs set to begin, there is a subtle difference in the air compared to start of any other postseason. In the NHL, fans can potentially look forward to a great Canadians/Bruins series that is not only exciting, but has a historical kick to it. Likewise basketball fans always have the chance to see if the Suns can finally get past the Spurs and football fans love seeing the rivalry of the Eagles Vs the City of Philadelphia when the Eagles so much as get tackled for a loss.

What a great game for the Sox!  Last night was another one of those nights where I couldn’t wait to fall asleep (not until after the game ended, of course) but I can honestly say that I went to bed happy.

I forgot to mention in one of my earlier blogs that Jerry Remy mentioned in his pregame report that the Royals were not going to be an easy team to beat.  This is the opposite of what I said at the end of my post after we swept the A's.  It looks like the Remdawg was right (as he usually is).  Meche really shut us down for 6 innings, allowing only  4 hits and two runs.  He didn't look too good in the first inning, as the Sox scraped up a pair of runs, but he got down to buisness after that.

Today, it wasn't enough to overcome even the lowly Kansas City Royals, however, in a 14-3 shellacking of the White Sox highlighted by a benches-clearing brawl in the fifth. And the result is that the Twins, who beat the Indians 6-2 to jump into first place.

For many baseball fans, last night wasn't a great night to watch baseball, as blowouts predominated early on. But, because of the beautiful game that is baseball, only three of them continued in their lopsided fashion, with the best of them highlighted by a homer from Micah Owings, the best-hitting pitcher in baseball, whom teammate Conor Jackson said had the "best pop" of anyone on the team. And all of them showed something about the winning and losing teams, proving that any baseball game is worth watching, even when it doesn't seem exciting.

Can Alex Gordon take a step towards fulfilling expectations?

Gordon entered last season with the label "the Next George Brett". Pretty lofty expectations for a 23 year-old who skipped Triple A ball. On the surface, Gordon had a terribly disappointing year, but if you look closer you see that from June on, he hit .296 with 12 home runs. Not monster numbers, but pretty decent for a rookie campaign. The expectations to be the savior of a franchise is not an easy burden to bear, especially for some one with so little experience. With the adjustment period behind him and expectations toned down, look for Gordon to perform more like the player he is expected to be than a repeat of last season. If Gordon does take the next step up, he and Billy Butler and Mark Teahan should combine to form a pretty formidable middle of the line up for the Royals. With Gil Meche and Brian Bannister in the starting rotation, Kansas City is a team you might look at the standings one day and realize they aren’t that bad.

The AL Central is my favorite race in the league this year.  The Tigers and Indians are both stacked this season and I think it will very close all year.  I don’t expect either of these teams to have anymore than a 4 or 5 game lead.  The rest of this division is pretty weak which will help these two powerhouses build up the wins.  Let’s get to the breakdowns.
