t of the postseason? That's hard to swallow.

By almost any standard, it's been a remarkable year. Matt Cassell has emerged as a viable NFL quarterback, and he'll make some franchise very happy this offseason. Bill Belichick has survived key injuries to the best player in the league, his best defensive player, his heart-and-soul leader of an already beleagured secondary and all of his running backs at some point this year and guided a winning journey. The Patriots have gotten better throughout the season and appear to be peaking at just the right time, only the right time might end a few weeks earlier than expected.

he game ultimately highlighted an interesting shift for the Patriots: The season is no longer about Matt Cassell. He's playing at a level more than high enough to win football games, as evidenced not only by his overall performance but also his strike to Gaffney and another on-the-money bullet to Randy Moss on a key third-down slant play.

riots, with BenJarvisGreenEllis (that is how his name should forever be written - end of story) and Matt Cassell as the primary weapons in the backfield, took the Rams out in come-from-behind fashion, and all St. Louis cares about are three missed penalties and an ill-spotted punt. Haslet even says the Rams "should have had 10 more yards" on the aforementioned punt spotting. 10 yards? Fine, take them. The Pats still score a touchdown on the ensuing drive, it just takes two plays longer.

t for the fact that a team that has mounted zero pass rush all season in San Diego managed to hound Matt Cassell all night. An an injured knee can't account for the fact that Bill Belichick has been out-coached - handily - in two of the last three games the Pats have played.
