Mike Timlin

11 September 2008

apelbon having pitched each of the last three nights and thus pretty much unavailable, had to go to Mike Timlin. Timlin has been reliable over the years, in fact this was his 1050th career appearance, tied most all time for a right hander, but this year he has had injury problems and looked lost at time with his diminishing velocity. He allowed two to reach base and eventually someone was going to drive in a run. Carlos Pena, a former Red Sox, blasted a three shot run to break the tie and give the Rays a 4-1 lead.

Red Sox bullpen struggled once again last night.  Before I go into details, I need to say that Mike Timlin has to be one of the nicest guys in baseball.  He’s a great family man who even brought his kid out with him on the field for BP during the final regular season game last year.  It kills me to say this, but I think Timlin might want to call it a career.  He just hasn’t been the same since his injury.  But on that note, don’t boo him! I understand that the fans are upset, as the Red Sox seemed to be blowing another huge lead.  But really now, stop the booing!  I don’t care if

ank you very much.

The bullpen also got a "supposed" shot in the arm with the return of Mike Timlin from the DL. I wish that excited me, I really do. There was a time when it would. But I think we've seen the best of Timlin, who is lugging an ERA north of 7 at this point. I love the guy, and I still want him in the bullpen, but be honest - do you want him on the hill with the game on the line? Even with the way things have gone lately, I don't think he can be much more than a sixth or seventh inning guy. Then again, another arm is another arm, and Timlin has proven me wrong before - I felt much the same way last year and he had a monster second half. Here's hoping I'm wrong again.

you through the 7th and 8th innings to your star closer in the 9th. With Julian Tavares gone, Mike Timlin on the DL, & Okijima still burnt out from the 2007 season, the Sox enter the 2nd part of the 2008 season with a huge hole in their bullpen.

Manny Delcarmen, who was expected to step into Mike Timlin’s role as the top right handed set up man, has been awful, especially when it comes to inherited baserunners. Opposing hitters boast a .385 batting average against with runners in scoring position when facing Delcarmen. Javier Lopez has given up 6 walks already in only 9 and 1/3 innings pitchers, 5 of those to the lefties who he is usually brought on specifically to get out.
