I heard a joke on WEEI today in which a caller asked "So, is Nomar Night tonight, and Ortiz Night tomorrow night? Or is Ortiz Night tonight?" I laughed. Then I realized that Ortiz and Nomar have a lot in common.
Nomar Garciaparra

What I do wanna talk about is how emotional it was in the ballpark when Nomar Garciaparra came to bat for the first time at Fenway Park since 2004. As he was lead off the second inning, fans were already getting out of their seats to cheer for him as he was walking towards the plate. He was clearly very touched by the reception he got, which seemed as if it would never end. I knew I didn’t want to stop clapping for him. It was the first time I got to in years and now I realized how much I missed it. What a great moment at Fenway Park. I’m glad that I was there for it. It’ll be hard to forget.

I left this for last because this is the part I’m most excited about: Nomar Garciaparra will be returning to Fenway Park tonight for the first time since 2003. Nomar was my favorite player growing up and I couldn’t be happier to see him return. I have no clue if he’ll be in the lineup (chances are he won’t be) but it sure would be great to see him get just a little bit of playing time so that the fans at Fenway can give him an ovation. Although if he doesn’t make it in the game tonight, I’m sure he’ll see some playing time somewhere in the series.

The Short Stop position is going on right now. If Nomar Garciaparra did not have so many injuries as he does, he could as well be the Derek Jeter for the Red Sox as of right now. Just imagine the salary space the Sox would have if they did not have to keep throwing money at the problem with Edgar Renteria, Orlando Cabrera (did a decent job as well) and the list goes on again. The divorce. It was inevitable, after weeks of torture and pain for both parties. It was sad, gazing back through the photo album of memories the two sides created together – two World Series championships, numerous All-Star games, and countless humorous vignettes. It was disheartening. But it was time. And finally, citing irreconcilable differences, Manny Ramirez and the Boston Red Sox officially separated July 31, 2008.

It's one of those days in recent Red Sox history. Any 20-something Red Sox fan can likely remember where he or she was standing when it happened. I was at Tanglewood in Western Massachusetts, and when I was first told the news I didn't believe it.

At the mid-point of the '08 season, when many players are being lauded for their first-half accomplishments, I think it would be a disservice to the deserving fumblers around the league not to recognize their remarkable level of ineptitude.

So can we please talk about Jason Giambi's mustache for a second? First the guy admits to wearing a gold thong when he needs to break out of a slump (it's hard to imagine that's all he's "breaking out of" in that kind of attire). And now he goes ahead and grows a full-out, mid-80s, Magnum PI mustache. Add these two nuggets to the fact that he's one of the 3 sweatiest humans on the planet, and that he's a New York Yankee, and you have the grossest person in America. Ever. Period.

Someone forgot to tell the NL West they were supposed to be the worst division in baseball last year. Out of nowhere this division became arguably the best division in the league and had one of the most fantastic finishes in recent memory. That play-in game was a game I will be talking about for years and I will never forget the Rockies historic run to the World Series. This year promises to be another great race in this division.
