Papelbon

18 May 2010

Now the Celtics game went down to the last seconds, so it was only fitting that Papelbon would then wait until 2 outs, a 3-2 count, and runners on Second and Third to finally get his first strike out of the 9th inning.

You're the stopper in the rotation. Get angry and pitch.

Papelbon, go watch tape of A-Rod crushing your pitch last night so that you remember how awful it feels, becuase apparently you've built a tolerance for the Angel's tape of the ALDS last year. Find your splitter. Use, your splitter. Save your fast ball for the high heat that batters will hopelessly flail under after changing their eye level from splits low in the zone to stinky cheese high and tight. If that doesn't work, find that cannon from your commercial.

I’m not an alarmist.

In fact, lets talk about Bard, Papelbon, and Okijima pitching 5 shut out innings in relief of Beckett. And believe me, I’m sure he was relieved when Youkilis hit a walk-off wall-scraper of his own in the 12th. I can’t remember the last time I saw better relief pitching from either the Sox or the Rangers. In fact, I can honestly say I was in awe of the Ranger’s relief pitcher Neftali Feliz clocking 102 on the radar gun. That’s like lethal weapon fast.

n 1st and 2nd and 1 out,  BIG trouble!!!    So of course the Sox would bring in Papelbon who is looking for the save which would set a new franchise record by moving past B. Stanley for No. 1 in saves, but after getting a strikeout and the 2nd out of the inning he would give up a double which rolled all the way to the wall allowing both runners to score giving Baltimore a 11-10 lead and the win.  This was a hard one to watch and definitely write about, well we got Beckett going today at 1:35 for a day game, so let's get a win!! Sox Nation here.

er of the night.  Without it, the Rangers probably would have won the game.  As Dad said, Papelbon gave up an unearned run in the 9th to give Rangers their 17th run of the evening.&nb

t innings from Mussina and the Yankees bullpen, they brought on their closer - the Yanks version of Papelbon, only 11 years older. And as is normal for the Sox, they got to Rivera.  So, after a hit, a walk, and two hit batters the bases were loaded with nobody out.  It looks like the Sox will tie it up.  But these are the Red Sox.  And while I'm a huge fan of the team, I also know that they leave men on base.  A lot.

he save?  You have Timlin pitch.  Yesterday my father suggested to me that Timlin be Papelbon's set-up man after Okajima blew Tuesday's game.  I would've asked him if he was

ough damage to give the Sox a lead.  So Wake left the game with Okie scheduled for the 8th and Papelbon for the 9th.  But Papelbon would never see the 9th, thanks to his set-up

While Masterson was great on his own, he owes his win to one person, and one person only - Jonathan Papelbon.  Pap came in in the 8th inning after Okajima loaded the bases with a ground rule double and two walks.  I'm sure Masterson was sitting in the dugout wondering why this kept happening to him. See, the last time the rookie was on the mound he also had the lead when he left the game after pitching 6 phenomenal innings.  Unfortunately the bullpen couldn't get through the 7th inning without giving up 4 runs and the lead.  And in case you forgot, the Sox lost that game and the series to the Angels.  But last night was different because the bullpen was different.  The main reason, they weren't suffering from the flu like they were a month ago.  Delcarmen may have given up the hit that got Teahen to score the first Royals run of the night, but luckily Callaspo's K would end the 7th without any further damage.  The lead may have been cut in half but it still belonged to the Sox.  And that's when things got interesting.  With two outs and the bases loaded in the 8th (thanks to Okajima) Francona thought it was time to bring in his closer.

It all started with a lead-off base hit, and whenever a man gets on base against Papelbon I get nervous. But 9 times out of 10 Pap can get out of the inning unscathed. Last night looked like one of those times because the next two batters Pap faced he got out. The first was a sac bunt by Matt Tolbert to move Delmon Young to 2nd. The second came when Adam Everett popped out to a sprinting Youkilis in foul ground. Great, one on and two out. But then

.  Lester hasn’t been good at all (walks way too many people) and outside of Okajima and Papelbon I don’t tend to trust any of their bullpen arms (Delcarmen is far to inconsistent).
