World Series

I don't remember if it was Garciaparra or Boone who jinxed Pap with one of those, "A mistake over the plate could tie the game" comments, but as soon as they said it, I knew the next pitch was going out of the yard.

o Major League Baseball.  I think that this year they got it right.  They didn't ship the World Series winners overseas to play in Japan or China or somewhere and they didn't open the season with Royals vs Tigers or some other match-up without much appeal.  This year the season began on Easter Sunday with a match-up between the defending

Yesterday on the MLB Channel, they were replaying Game 4 of the 2007 World Series.  I tuned in during the 8th inning and was very content in watching the final innings.  What made it so much fun was  remembering who I was watching with and things that they were saying as the score changed.   It was a bit emotional to bring back those memories that were still fairly fresh.  And it was even more fun to remember how excited we all were after Papelbon recorded the final strikeout to win the game, and the series.

ur cable or satellite system, you're missing out.

I'm currently watching Game 6 of the 1975 World Series - the classic between the Reds and the Red Sox.  For a guy who was born in 1977 and grew up a Sox fan, I've of course heard and read all about the 75 season and the

that I've had a few days to drink think it over, I've come to the conclusion that life without the World Series this year might not be so bad after all.  And to help other members of the Nation out there, I've composed a list of the top ten reasons why it's ok that the Red Sox got knocked out and I don't have to watch the Series this year.  Enjoy!

nbsp;      The Boston Red Sox start out in search of their second straight World Series title tonight in Anaheim and while they’ve won 9 straight post-season games against the Angels, including the three-game sweep last year, don’t expect that to have much of a bearing on the proceedings. Nor, for that matter, should one place too much emphasis on the fact that the A’s ran away with the AL West, finishing out there 22 games ahead of the Rangers. Bear in mind, as you look to ‘write in’ a series win for Boston, that the Angels have taken eight of the nine games they’ve played against them this year. Three more wouldn’t be a stretch for them.        The Sox are dealing with what is hoped to be a minor bump on the road to the

More than simple offense, in the modern era of baseball, for a team to make the World Series it needs a home run threat.

Let me be clear, not a home run hitter, a home run threat. In the late innings of any game, with Mariano Rivera or Jonathon Paplebon on the mound, who plays Mighty Casey for the fans? Who on the Toronto Blue Jays makes you feel like the game is already over? Any player on the field can hit a home run, even David Eckstein gets his 3-5 a year. A home run threat is a player, who, at any time, in any situation, has the potential to either win, tie or make it a close game. Looking at the 2008 Blue Jays Roster, is there anyone on their roster give you that feeling?

After paying nearly sixty million dollars just to speak to Daisuke Matsuzaka, the question that should be asked: has the pricey conversation worked out?

In the first season of Mr. Matsuzaka’s season with the Red Sox, it did not go as well as people hoped.  Boasting a 15-12 record, 4.40 ERA and zero shut outs, the Red Sox fans, or maybe myself, had questioned this deal.   However, after seeing the gyro ball thrower play an amazing post-season, I had a feeling that he would be one of the top starters in the American League for the 2009 season.  So far, I’ve been correct in that prediction.

The sox now own baseball's best home record of 21-5, surpassed only by 1978's 22-4--sweeping a home stand for the first time in 2 years by clinching the last of a 4 game series against Kansas City.  Dice-K now owns an AL leading 8-0 record,  walking 6 to lead the majors in BBs.  Perhaps Varitek's day off affected his high pitch count (118 in 5 2/3 innings, 67 strikes), since he's not used to Cash.

od bet.

A string of five straight postseason appearances through the nineties, including a World Series defeat at the hands of the Braves, has led to a more winning attitude. They reached the playoffs in 2001, only to lose to the Mariners, and then fell one out short of the

Everyone's going green, why not include baseball, too?

4. Bring back day games for the World Series. Baseball's being lost to other sports, in part because kids don't watch the games (live or in person) the way they could when the games were in the daytime. Sure, ratings are higher at night, but how much does this affect ad revenue, really? And even if it does, sometimes you've gotta sacrifice the present for the future, instead of the other way around.

30 March 2008

Over the past month or so I have taken the time to do some research on every team and break them down.  I pointed out their strengths and weaknesses, discussed which player or part of a team needs to have a big season to push that team to the next level and I made predictions on how every team in baseball would finish.  I talked about how each division would be won and why.  I took the time to look not just as each teams stars but the back end of their bullpen and their bench.  I know we are technically two games into the MLB season but with Opening Day being tomorrow (sorry Braves and Nationals) it is now time for me to tell you which teams will make the playoffs, who will win the awards, how the playoffs will shake up and which team, come October will be on top of the world.

But then there's Beckett. In a post World Series season, where all the usual suspects of laziness, afterglow, injury, ego, money and age make it profoundly difficult to repeat, Josh Beckett is exactly the kind of player you figure has the capacity to transcend that stuff. And now he's hurt. And the weird part is, despite the (we're told) negative MRI's, it's either a serious problem we're not being told about, or it's the biggest little problem since Kaz Matsui's anal fissures. He's already been scratched from the opener, and every quote from Fort Meyers sounds more confused than the next. But I think I'm going to play this one optimistically. There's nothing to worry about, Josh. You're going to be fine. Especially if you follow my helpful suggestions:

nt on him.

Colorado Rockies

Are the Rockies the real thing?

The Rockies miraculous run to the World Series was well publicized last year as they won 21 of 22 games before getting swept by the Red Sox in the Fall Classic. Many feel that they just got hot down the stretch and were a fluke team in 2007. That couldn’t be further from the truth and the Rockies will be contenders in 2008. The heart of the lineup that scored the second most runs in the National League last season returns with MVP candidate Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe and Troy Tulowitzki. While anyone would expect a team in Colorado to score plenty of runs, it is always pitching that becomes the question. The Rockies’ pitching staff posted a very respectable 4.32 ERA last season, but what may be surprising to many, is that their road ERA was better than that of the vaunted San Diego pitching staff (4.29 to 4.42). With young fireballer Ubaldo Jiminez joining the rotation full time, a solid staff led by Jeff Francis becomes even better. Colorado may miss the playoffs this year due to a competitive division, but they will be one of the teams right there at the end battling for a berth.

endeared himself to many Red Sox fans with his solo home run in the 8th inning of game four of the World Series in Denver. It proved to be the winning run.

The head scratching aspect of the deal is where it leaves Coco Crisp. He was all but gone in the trade for Johan Santana had the Twins chosen the Sox offer, but when that fell through it left questions regarding his role on the team.
