Youkilis

20 May 2010

Youkilis had a 4 RBI night with a 3 run home run and an RBI double to drive in Martinez, who had a hot night himself.

Lowell was sadly ineffective, but after riding the bench for so long, can you really blame him? It's a real tragedy that the 2007 World Series MVP no longer has a place on this team, but that does not give him the right to make distracting comments from that seat on the bench. I would pay the Sox 12 million to let me sit on the bench if I had it. Don't complain when they're still giving you the 12 million. I understand that players want to play, but why not make the most of your time on the bench? It's obvious that you're in the twilight of your career, even if you are released or traded. Why not use this time to become closer with the coaching staff? I would start looking ahead to your next career, and this would be an excellent opportunity to make the transition from player to player-coach. Continue to be a mentor for younger players, and stop complaining about your place on this team. Be grateful for having any place at all.

However a solo shot does.

Neither team could get on the board, until the sixth when Youkilis hit a deep fly ball to left. Although Hinske made the catch, the ball was plenty deep enough for Ellsbury to tag up, run home and get the Sox their first run. Unfortunately Carlos Pena, the Rays version of Big Papi, came to the plate in the 7th and tied the score with his solo shot. Beckett held strong for another inning and left with the score still tied.

mart move.  He had two homers in the first game and three hits in yesterday's.  And while Youkilis was hitless in Monday's game, he helped give the Sox some breathing room last night when he launched homer #24 into the cheap seats in the 5th inning. And speaking of breathing room, let's talk about Dice-K.  They're calling him the escape artist in Boston because no matter what kind of bases loaded situation he finds himself in, he seems to get out of it without any damage.  That's exactly what happened in the fourth inning.  After giving up two runs in the 3rd, he proceeded to load the bases in the 4th with no one out.  It was a nightmare to watch.  But then Houdini appeared and Dice-K got Melvin Mora to strike out and Aubrey Huff to pop out to

Liz then walked in a run by by giving Lowell a free pass. Then Youkilis stepped up, and on a 3-1 pitch, he launched the ball over the monster seats for the first grand slam of his career. Now the Sox are up 7-1. Another six men would come to the plate before the inning was over and by the time the dust had cleared two more runs had scored and the Sox were up 9-1. They'd add three more to their total making the final score 12-1. Since the Rays lost yesterday the Sox were now only a half game away from leading the East.

That'll be the question on the Nation's mind until Youkilis is back in the lineup.  And as of this morning, we're still waiting to hear the 1st baseman's fate for today's 2nd game against the D-backs.It was during warmups before the top of the 5th inning that Mike Lowell tossed Youk a routine grounder.  Unfortunately last night was not routine and the ball bounced hitting

It's the Sox turn to bat and this time it's Lowell who gets a double to start the inning. Then Youkilis walks. But just like the 10th, the Sox can't get Lowell home. Varitek grounds back to the pitcher, who throws to 3rd for the force out and both Cora and Ellsbury strike out.

Just want to throw this statistical breakdown out there:

Youk's been complaining/slamming/throwing things a lot this year, largely in response to a perception of an inflated strike zone.  His frustration does have some potential statistical backing, ignoring the possibility that his eyes just aren't what they were in 2006.  With no further ado, some numbers --

d a whopping 5.5 minutes longer than there were five years ago.  So what?  To quote Kevin Youkilis, "this game is not about time".  It's about intensity.  Fans go to games for a good pitching duel or to see their favorite slugger belt one out of the park.  It's not a race to see if they can get in and out of the ballpark in record time.  If it were, fans wouldn't set up shop in the parking lots to tailgate.  But evidently that doesn't matter.  Commissioner Bud Selig decided it was time to speed things up.  So, he made conference calls to all club managers on Wednesday letting them know that starting as soon as possible, some rules were going to start being enforced.  Those rules are:1)  Umpires will ask batters to approach home plate from the on-deck circle and enter the       batter's box faster.  And if the batter doesn't, he'll get an automatic strike.

the final game and the series and prove yet again what an asset the first baseman is to this team. Youkilis has been amazing this series.  Over the four games he got five hits, seven RBI's, and four homers.  Those home runs tied him with Manny and Papi at seven so far for the season.  The seven RBI's put him just one behind Oritz and four ahead of Manny.  Who would've thunk?  On top of that, he's continued his errorless turn at first base, making the thought of him leaving the team a frightening one.  It's shocking to think this could be his last year with the Sox.  You read that right.  Believe it or not, Youk only has a one-year contract.  He's 29 and he's one of the most important players of the team.  We already know about his skill at first.  He can cover third on a moment's notice and provide the same kind of defense he does at the opposite corner.  He's batted in practically every spot available, from lead-off to clean-up, and he's currently hitting in the six spot.  It doesn't matter where he is, he produces.  And while
