Hype Leads to Disappointment...Usually.

Let's take a trip down memory lane. We're going to travel all the way back to a month called March in the year of 2008. One of the biggest discussion topics of the time was young pitchers. The Yankees had their "Big three" who have turned into 2/3 of a big bust, and one overrated yet above average pitcher who hates Kevin Youkilis. Then there was the great debate of who is going to be the better pitcher, Joba or Buchholz. Joba's nasty outta the pen! But Clay threw a no hitter already! Joba's going to be an even better starter! But Clay threw a no hitter already! Joba's slider is rated an 80! Clay's curve drops 12 to 6 and is disgusting! Joba throws harder! CLAY THREW A NO HITTER ALREADY!

Ah yes. Now let's remember that hindsight is supposed to be 20/20. In this case, I think hindsight had a stigmatism in each eye. Clay Buchholz, the supposed upcoming rookie phenom hasn't won a game since May, and is currently sporting a jersey that says "Sea Dogs" across the front. So here's the biggest question. What the hell is wrong with him? Mechanics? Some say he's bending his back leg too much. Mental? Could be. Actually, that's probably a lot of the problem. Put him in the bullpen? Might not be a bad idea since he tends to give up most of his runs on the second time through the batting order.

My personal opinion is that I do not want Clay in the majors until his problems are solved. Entirely. He's obviously got quite a few issues he needs to figure out. Let the minors be the place for that instead of putting an automatic loss on the mound once every 5 days in Boston. It's too late in the season to be fooling around like that. I think this move should have come sooner.

In other news.. the Blue Jays? Again? Seriously? Balls. The Sox have 10 games against the Blue Jays for the rest of the season, and the Blue Jays more or less own us. Great great news! I'm really pulling for Paul Byrd tonight. Hopefully the Red Sox can figure out Marcum this game since they didn't last week.

Sidenote. I went to Shea Stadium Monday night. Awesome game with the Mets coming back in the bottom of the 8th. I wore my brand new Jason Bay shirt (President of the Fan Club, right here). I did not get one obscene comment. I was surprised! Only an usher said something to me about it. He goes, "Hello Miss Red Sox fan. Please keep those Yankees out of first place!" Maybe all of New York isn't bad after all. Nah, who am I kidding.

  1. I agree that it took them too long to make this decision. As bad as Charlie Zink's game was against the Rangers I felt they should have kept him around to give Clay some more time. My guess is that Clay's problems are 90% mental, 10% mechanical. His biggest problem is that he doesn't feel good about himself. I don't know what it'll take to give him that confidence boost but it's definitely not losing another game in Boston. I don't think they should bring him back this year unless they are really desperate. But I have high hopes for Clay Buchholz in 2009.
